Accompanying the exhibition of the same name, Draw Them In, Paint Them Out (published by Yale University Press in association with the Jewish Museum) features the work of painter Philip Guston (1913–1980) in dialogue with leading contemporary Black artist Trenton Doyle Hancock (b. 1974). Written by Rebecca Shaykin with contributions from Hancock, curator Valerie Cassel Oliver, and award-winning author and cartoonist Art Spiegelman, the book examines how art, activism, and humor can deepen our understanding of Black and Jewish experiences in the United States. The design mirrors the dynamic interplay between the two artists, with images and text engaging in a push-and-pull relationship across spreads to reflect the contrast and connection between their works. Striking pinks and yellows are featured in the design to further infuse the book with a bold visual energy, while echoing the vibrant colors used by the artists themselves.
